Makers. Craftsmen. Artisans. Call them what you will; creatives enrich our lives and communities. The arts help us identify with each other. They can connect us to a time or place. Sight, sound, smell, touch and taste evoke emotion and can expand our understanding of the world around us.
Nestled among lush eclectic gardens on Hughes Road at Bargara is a co-operative space where 30-plus local creatives showcase and sell their handmade wares. Artisans 4670 stock everything from art to cosmetics and crafts, jewellery and home decor, as well as farm-to-plate condiments and local foods. They run regular workshops and demonstrations.
Crush Magazine recently met with four makers at Artisans 4670 to talk about what inspires and motivates their creative practices.

When Sharon Grimsey moved to Bundaberg she couldn’t find any locally made candles she liked, so she started making her own and selling them at Shalom Markets. Aromatica Bargara now has eight fragrances (with two more on the way), inspired by Sharon’s travels around Australia. She sells bamboo reed diffusers and refills, soy wax candles, bath salts and lotions online and through dozens of local stores, including Chippindall’s Newsagency and By the Beach Boutique in Agnes Water.

Jane Marin is an award-winning mixed media artist, illustrator, intuitive healer and life coach. Jane’s art business started about six years ago with the creation of oracle cards. They were the subject of extensive praise, inspiring Jane to continue painting what she sees in her dreams. As well as selling her original artworks, Jane prints her artwork on bags, cushions and coffee cups. She runs workshops and retreats from her home studio, Wattle Cottage.

Jess Newitt is the Head of Department for the Arts at Kepnock State High School. Her own mixed media work focusses predominantly on abstract botanicals. As well as running workshops for the likes of Creative Regions on the weekends, Jess offers private lessons, workshops and events. She is studying art therapy and has an intuitive approach to her artistic practice. Art is her escape and is an opportunity to let her emotions flow through. Jess’s original artwork is available for purchase at Artisans 4670, as well as handpainted and printed bags and drink coolers on her online store.

Inspiring others to be kind to their families and the environment, Beverley Whip is the proud founder and owner of Refill not Landfill. The former natural jewellery maker started the cleaning, laundry and beauty product business to reduce the amount of single-use plastics going into landfill and our oceans. Motivated to ensure wildlife is still around when her son is her age, her products are Australian-made and free of nasty chemicals.
